Lots of Photos

Hi Everyone,

We had a busy time clearing one of our cupboards this week as we had to relinquish it to the Council. We did however acquire two extra cupboards in the kitchen which works out quite well for us.
Thank you to everyone who helped, particularly Iris, Suzie, Grace and Sandy.

I mentioned that it is time to start planning your quilt for our show next year. We will be needing the dimensions and colours of your quilts in April. This is required for the hall layout and the hire of the frames for hanging.
Everyone should endeavour to make one.
The minimum size is 1m x 1m and the maximum is 280cm wide x 290 cm high.

 Robyn Jnst. and her husband are going to Trundle in the Central West of NSW, west of Parkes in the Parkes Shire.
The Trundle area has been in severe drought for years. The school headmaster has many ideas to help the children get through this hard time. Many of the children go home after school to help hand feed the animals. The headmaster tries to lift their spirits.
Robyn has been asked for 48 gifts for some of the children and has been given their ages and likes and preferences. Some have never had a Christmas present.
Robyn and her husband are driving out to Trundle to deliver the quilts and gifts.

 Suzie has made this cute cushion for her grandson's second Birthday. She has called it Cuddly Dudley. There is a pocket in the back for a special book.

 Grace used a linen/cotton blend and hand painted the triangles.

Waggas and Community

Hullo Everyone,

The hall was busy this week. Waggas were being sewn and planned for our show next year. The Lord Mayor's Picnic quilt was being pinned together. Some members were knitting.  And of course lots of chatter and catching up with news.

Akiko will be back this coming week. She has been in Japan visiting her mother. I was anxious about her with the Typhoon Japan was having. Thankfully all is well but Akiko was very sad to see the devastation quite near her.

I contacted Coleen about having her jewellery "shop" here this year. Coleen is extremely busy and feels that she cannot come this year. Perhaps next year.

Suzie bought a new first aid kit as the other one went missing. This is kept in the kitchen cupboard if needed.

Show and Tell:

Grace finished her Maria Shell quilts from the recent workshop. Such amazing and interesting effects. No rulers are used and the solid colours are eye catching. 

Grace especially likes the effect of the right arrows joining the ones below. It certainly is stunning.

A Little Late

Hi Everyone,

I am a little late this week. My weekend was very busy but here I am at last!

Our numbers were down this week - school holidays and others travelling. However it was a fun and busy day for those who were there.

We received a very nice thank you letter from the charity that we support through Robyn Jst. The charity is under the umbrella of St Vincent de Paul Society. It provides struggling families with material support and also gives them hope and reassurance to know that they are not alone through their difficult journey.  Robyn delivered cot quilts and teddy bears that we have been making.

We always appreciate these kind responses.

Robyn Jst. made these cute caps for newborn babies. We will give them to Westmead to see if they require further donations.

Grace started this quilt at our retreat in September. It is a bright and happy quilt and is for Community.

Below we have Helena's quilt started at the Maria Shell workshop last weekend. Those who attended the workshop had a busy and rewarding weekend,

A Summery Day

Hi Everyone,

It was very warm when we arrived at our meeting this week. Summer is well and truly on its way.
Daylight saving starts this Sunday.

Alison received notification that Craft Depot at Pennant Hills has closed after 23 years. It is always sad when fabric and quilting stores close.
There is a Hobbysew at Westfield Hornsby.

The Bulli Corner Quilters are having their show from 18-19 October  -  9am to 4pm.
It is held at Northern Illawarra Uniting Church, Cnr. Princes Hwy and Point St., Bulli.

Show and Tell:

Carolyn had made 3 more baby quilts. She has now made a total of 163 baby quilts for Westmead.
Sheila also had finished one this week.
I will have to post the photo next week as I totally forgot to photograph them.
I had my 12 year old granddaughter at home on her own so I couldn't spend a lot of time at the meeting this week.

Marie K. made the cat cot quilt below for Robyn Jst. charity that she supports.

Ros has her mother's doll from 1924. The clothes had started to disintegrate. Ros gave it to Robyn who has made new clothes - petticoat, lace stockings, dress and shoes. Robyn enjoyed doing it.
It looks absolutely amazing.

Margaret D. made this lovely quilt for Community. We are calling it "Nine Patch Stars".

A Special Guest

Hullo Everyone,

We had such a special meeting this week. Kathy brought Maria Shell along to speak to us and we had 7 guest quilters join us as well. It was very nice having visitors to our hall.

Maria took us through her quilting journey and showed pictures of quilts she has made since she began. She even showed us her quilts that had been entered into shows, only to be rejected.
After all that she showed two quilts that have since won second place.
It was interesting to see how her style gradually changed. Maria is trying new things
all the time. A very creative lady.
We certainly enjoyed our day with her.

It was Maria's first time in Australia. She is keen to return. Maria has held workshops in Melbourne for the Modern Quilt Group. Then to Sydney for workshops this weekend with Kathy Doughty at Material Obsession - Making Prints out of Solids on Saturday and Improv Triangles, Perfectly Pointless on Sunday.
She is then off to New Zealand, New York and finally the International Quilt Festival in Houston which starts on October 28.
A busy schedule.

As next week is Community Day, we are going to make bags for Days for Girls. If you can manage to bring your machine you will be able to join in and get sewing.

This one below Maria called 'Wormhole'. She has started to work with curved shapes. It is one of my favourites.

Happy Birthday

Hi Everyone,

The Hunters Hill Quilters celebrated our 37th Birthday this week. The group started in 1982 and has been going ever since. We were fortunate to have two of the original members with us as well, Carolyn and Margaret.
In fact they arrived just as we started to sing Happy Birthday. Pretty good timing!

We had another busy day this week. It started with our Show Committee meeting at 9 a.m. We are underway with bookings etc ready for our show next August. There is a lot to do.

Sandy brought in a huge bunch of Continental Italian parsley for us to share and the kitchen was in very safe hands with Heather and Joy in charge. Ann also contributed two slices. Everything was delicious.

The Crafts and Stitches team is hosting the Newcastle Show from September 26 - 29 in the Newcastle Entertainment Centre,  Broadmeadow. Hours are from 10 am to 4 pm each day.

Hayley joined us this week and showed us photos of her 'new' island home in the Torres Strait. I hope she can visit us again before she goes back.

A big thank you to Kerry and Narelle for providing the beautiful cakes and drink for the Birthday.The table looked so pretty as you can see from the photo.

 Two lovely ladies with their medals. It was Helena's first marathon! What an achievement.
Akiko ran the half marathon and came first in her age group. She was disappointed that her time was just a tad over last time, but an hour and a half sounds pretty amazing to me!
Congratulations to you both.

There was another baby quilt from Robyn that was made from orphan blocks leftover from a show quilt.
It has mysteriously disappeared!  I will take another photo for next week.

Sunny Day

Hi Everyone,

After being so early last week, I am late this week. A busy weekend.

We had a really happy retreat last weekend at Kurri Kurri. 25 members came and lots of sewing was accomplished.
Suzie had us decorating items to be sold at our show next year. Some girls shared - one sewing and the other decorating which worked very well.
The Fat Quarter game this year was particularly fun. Two black and white fabrics were fought over by a number of us and a good time was had by all.
The weather was sunny but very windy and we didn't see as many kangaroos as last year.

A great big thank you to Narelle for organising everything perfectly. Narelle even had the staff at Kurri Kurri onside and singing her praises.

Iris brought along the box of 'orphan' blocks. Many girls tried their hand, sorting and trying various options. The end result was fantastic.
At our meeting Iris told us who had made which block. Lots of fun.

Our Birthday party is next week. Bring along a glass and we will have cake. I believe we are 37 years old which is a wonderful achievement.

We will have a show committee meeting at 9 am next week in the hall. There is quite an agenda, so come prepared.

Moina called in to stay for a while this week. It was lovely to see her after a long absence. She hopes to come more regularly from now on.

Narelle made this cot quilt to be donated to a charity. The cats look super!
