Thursday 15th May

Not too big a crowd today.
But those present are buzzing as always.
Although Elva thinks we are quiet today!

Elva went to a community event of Hunters Hill
Our Community quilt donation was used as a lucky door price.
Mr Wong won the price, he was very happy with it!

Tomorrow is the start of our retreat.
Don't forget to bring,
3 fat quarters and/or reels.

New Book in  the library:

Mother's Day Thursday

What a special day it was today!
It was our due date for the Playing Cards.
Almost the whole deck of cards was hanging around the hall.
Jenny is very positive that todays missing cards will be present at our show.
So I will only give you a very small peek into this challenge.
If you want to see them all come to our show,

The 2014 Hunters Hill Quilt Show

Opening night, Thursday 7th, August 2014:    7.30pm to 9.30pm   $20 entry ticket

Next week we will have our retreat up in the Blue Mountains.
We are pretty excited about that.
In case you want to have a bit of a play.
Jessica will bring her collections of stamps, if you can bring some fabric paint and some fabrics to print on! We can have some fun.

Last week we worked on Made Fabric.
This photo shows our collaborated work.

Today we had a visitor from Queensland.
She has been a longtime member, before she move to Queensland in 2006.
Cate rejoined us today. She even brought a quilt to show.
It was great to see you.

Then we had some baby quilts.
For those keen on making some and going to the retreat.
Robyn prepared some kits ready to go, only need sewing and quilting!

Moina

Next to show is another collaboration.
Laurel bought a nice piece of fabric at swap day at MO.
Grace fought of a nice T-block and together with the girls of the orange group they put together this lovely quilt.

This beautiful starry quilt is made by Marie K.

Deborah treated herself with a great workshop with Helen Godden over the ANZAC weekend.
It's all about painting and quilting!
Isn't it amazing.

Happy Mother's Day

First of May, Labour Day

We had a real working bee going on this Labour Day!
Jessica is in charge to organise workshops.
This community day was used to do a workshop on" Made Fabric" inspired by Victoria Findlay Wolfe. Helena did Victoria"s workshop last year, organised by Material Obsession.
Helena gave a brief talk about what she had learned at that workshop.

Ready to go

everybody buzzing

Thanks to the work Jessica did up front at home, we have managed to make enough blocks for a "blokey" quilt.
Thank you Jessica and Susan.

Finished blocks

Furthermore there was more going on!
There was the show meeting.
A lot of progress has been made.
Charity is looking good.

Thursday 24th April

Now that school holidays are almost over,  it will be good to have everyone back sewing next week for Community Day (1st May) and a 'fabric making' workshop organised by Jessica, Helena and Susan.    All 'fabric' made will be used for community quilts. The only thing we each need to bring is a small cutting mat and a small rule.

And another reminder  - playing cards to be finished and ready for display on May 8th: just before Mother's Day.   Jenny already has 27 - so 27 more to go to have 'The full Deck with two Jokers'.

Interesting up-coming event:  The Quilt Study Group are holding their 20th Anniversary Seminar on 6th and 7th July 2014 at the Australian National Maritime Museum, Darling Harbour.   Check out their website - it is a very interesting program,  including our own Jessica as one of the guest speakers.   Monday 7th, is 'Quilt Uncovering' with interesting quilts and their stories from four well known quilters.

Only one quilt was shown at 'Show and Tell',  but my camera found a couple of extra 'not quite finished' special quilts ...

This is a community quilt, made by Jessica and quilted by Gil ... 'Avalon 1'

Check out what Elva is making for her granddaughter  .....Magic Faraway Tree ?

And while the rest of us have 4 or 5 blocks stashed away somewhere safe  ...   look what Grace has done with her NY Beauty blocks !

What else can I say  ... keep sewing 'till next week.     Cheers Iris

Friday 18 April 2014

Easter Thursday

Business first,  and then some great 'show and tell' pictures.   The key 'business' discussion was focused on Jessica's research and plans for Workshops during this year.

  • First a community workshop next community day - 1st May:  Jessica, Susan and Grace will take us through the Victoria Findlay Wolfe's fabric making process from her book '15 minutes of play'.  The aim is to make 'fabric' in 'masculine' colours, so we an add some 'men and boy' quilts to our community stash.  Sewing machines will be needed.
  • Later in the year, probably 3rd quarter,  we can look forward to a presentation from Bridget Giblin to share her collection of old quilts.
  • Jessica is also looking at workshops sharing our in house skills:  needle turn applique and machine quilting were both mentioned.

Any other requests/suggestions - let Jessica know and I'm sure she will make it happen!

Other stuff:

  • Last opportunity to participate in the May retreat:  see Kerry soon/i.e. immediately
  • Don't forget, May 8th for your Playing Card

Show and Tell
Check out this 'modern Australian crazy patchwork'  from Betty.

and the detail ... including the selvages

Marie G. contributed four cot quilts for the Grace Centre

To add to our community 'stash' -  a quilt from Narelle and quilted by Gil.

And Janet had a story on this one .. the left overs from another quilt and she made quite a few blocks with no bobbin in the machine !

Have a great Easter  ...   Cheers Iris

Thursday 10th April

The play card challenge due in a month!
Hope everybody is still enjoying The challenge! I have seen a couple of amazing cards.
It will be a great display the Thursday before Mother's day.

Today's Business!

  • Don't forget about your show entrees!  They should have been entered by now.
  • Provide an emergency contact number.

Show and Tell

One more cot quilt by Janet

And another beauty by Mary K.

Iris did bring in the lovely books of the Round Robin.

Happy Stitching!

April Community Day

This is Iris again, standing in for 'Helena, the blogger' as Helena stood in for Elva 'the boss'!

As it was community day,  I thought I would start with Community News and do business later.

Susan has been super busy and organised for 3 quilts to be donated this week:   Betty was delivering two quilts to the Ryde Hunters Hill Community Centre.  One will be a gift to the 'Volunteer of the Year' and the other will be raffled to raise money toward the  BBQ for the Pittwater Road Community Housing.
Both quilts were made by Marie G. using fabrics from Betty W.

Scrappy Betty

Serpent Swirls

The third donation went to the Hornsby Lions Club, to be auctioned at a fund raising dinner in May. The quilt was made by Narelle and quilted by Grace.

Ray of Sunshine

And continuing with community news:  Susan has two quilt tops in the 'cupboard' which need to be sandwiched and quilted .... any volunteers ?

And a new quilt to be added to the 'community stash' came from Robyn S. and her team of quilters.

Forest Floor

and the detail  .....

I couldn't resist taking a picture of this dramatic quilt being created on the design wall:  with help from Kathy's latest MO book.

Now on to Business:

  • Membership fees are overdue.
  • Show entries are due next week.
  • Consider putting an entry into the Modern Quilters 1st Show coming up in May - talk to Elva or Kathy for more details

And last but not least,  birthday congratulations to Robyn Ja   ...

Have a great sewing week   ...   Cheers Iris
