Challenges

'Challenges' are a regular source of fun, frustration, and a trip outside the 'nine patch' for the Hunters Hill Quilters. Over the years there have been many - some simple and some 'challenging'!
Here are some:

2015 Christmas Challenge: The Mini Jelly Roll Challenge

It started with 40 mini jelly rolls, just like this :

with instructions to make as many blocks as you wish.
The result was the two quilts below, which were donated to a community need.

Iris's Choice (first pick of all the blocks)

Gil's dilemma (Gil took the rest!)

2015 Christmas Party: Raffle Block

To celebrate the Christmas Party festivities, we had a 'block' raffle:  each block entered received a raffle ticket.

The blocks displayed as they arrived at the Party - and Narelle took home all 130  blocks !

2015 Mystery Challenge

A fun challenge to push the limits of creativity.   Organised by Jess and aptly named,

"Inspiration - Monstrosity to Magic!"

It starts with a lucky dip - who can resist a pretty parcel!

Open and it and you find a small  'bundle' of assorted un-loved fabric ! Then you need to decide what to do with your mystery selection !

Jenny was first off the mark with a cushion cover: setting a very high standard

Then came   ...   Gil's reversible Quilt Bag

A pretty little girl's skirt from Susan D.

A cot quilt with horses

Robyn s. used her scraps of  'doll'  fabric to also make a cot quilt:

Decorated Coat Hangers from Iris:

Grace selected the smallest parcel and found just the yellow fabric - her creativity produced this bright cot quilt to add to the Grace Centre Collection.

Joy used her challenge to make a pot-holder: check out the very stylish 'piped' binding.

2014 Christmas Challenge

A simple challenge - make a block with a Star or a Funky flower on a white background.  The size can be any square or rectangle based on 2 inches - 6 x 4, 6 x 6, 8 x 8 etc.etc.   The completed quilt was donated to a charitable cause.

The completed quilt -  Stars in our Garden

2014 Playing Card Challenge

For the 'Playing Card' challenge,  each member was asked to select a playing card from a deck of cards and then represent that card in a 9 inch by 14 inch small quilt. The 'Full Pack of cards' were exhibited 'in house' in May and then at the 2014 Hunters Hill Quilt Show.

2013 Round Robin Challenge

Organised by Grace and Jenny, this challenge was started in March 2013.
The rules of a traditional Round Robin challenge are:
Create your central block, then it gets passed on to 3 others to add a border
The rules of this HHQ Round Robin challenge included:

  • Create your central block, start a diary and include a label
  • First Border: a 6 inch border that includes triangles
  • Second Border: a 6 inch border that includes squares and/or rectangles
  • Third Border: a 6 inch border of your choice
  • Back to the original owner to complete as desired and have ready to share at our Christmas party, 2013

Maria Challenge 2012

The finished Maria Challenge quilts were displayed at our 30th birthday celebrations in September, 2012.

The Challenge:
  • Create a coverlet as per the challenge in the book "The Maria Challenge Quilt" by Margaret A. Rowe.
Rules for the Challenge:
  • Use only the supplies in the bag to make both the quilt top and the backing.
  • You may swap fabrics from your bag with other people doing the challenge, but you must not add fabric from your stash.
  • Only one pair of scissors may be used.
  • You may not use a pencil or paper, even for doing mathematical calculations.
  • No iron - you will not find one hiding in the bottom of the bag!
  • You may not use a rotary cutter, mat, ruler or sewing machine - they're not hiding in the bag either!
  • Wadding was not provided for the convicts nor is it for you.
  • You may create any type of quilt you choose: traditional blocks, applique, medallion, crazy or contemporary.
